Anyone interested in starting a business is strongly advised to:

  • do your research;

  • prepare a business plan; and

  • speak with a lawyer and an accountant to obtain advice about the financial and legal advantages and disadvantages of different business structures.

The three most common ways of carrying on business in Ontario are:

  • Sole Proprietorship – a business owned by one person.

  • Partnership – a business owned by two or more people.

  • Corporation – a legal entity that is separate from its owners, the shareholders.

Exhaustive information is available through other sources, including Forms of Business Organization, the Ontario government and your local public library.
